Leaking oil out the back of the engine or finding brown sludge in the coolant bottle? On the SZ Territory 2.7 diesel, that's very often the oil cooler. This Febi Bilstein kit replaces Ford R84Q6C711DB and comes complete with the cooler, filter housing, oil filter and gasket, ready to fit. Genuine is nearly $2,000. This isn't.
What's in the box
- Oil cooler and filter housing assembly
- Oil filter element
- Housing gasket / seal
Most aftermarket units sell the cooler on its own and leave you chasing the gasket separately. This kit has everything for the job.
Fitment
- Ford Territory SZ and SZ MKII, 2011 to 2016
- 2.7L V6 TDCi "Lion" diesel (276DT, 140kW)
- RWD and AWD
Got a petrol Territory? This part is SZ diesel only. Petrol Territories don't use it.
The classic Lion V6 failure
The oil cooler sits in the valley of the engine under the intake. When it fails, oil pools in the V and runs out the back of the engine, often dripping off the bellhousing. Internal failures show up first as oil traces in the coolant bottle, then get worse fast.
Common signs your oil cooler is failing
- Brown sludge or "mayo" in the coolant expansion tank
- Losing coolant with no obvious external leak
- Milky or thin engine oil, or the oil level rising
- Oil weeping from the back of the engine valley
- Running hot, especially when towing
Don't get caught out
A lot of workshops replace the oil filter and seal first, because it's cheap and easy. If the leak comes back, it's the cooler.
What it costs to fix
Expect around 4 to 5 hours labour, as the intake has to come off. Generic online "oil cooler" estimates of a few hundred dollars don't account for how buried this one is on the Lion V6.
Fitting notes
- If oil has got into the coolant, flush the cooling system properly before refilling or the contamination comes straight back
- If coolant has got into the oil, change the oil and filter after fitting
- Check the coolant inlet lines up before bolting everything down. Some aftermarket alloy inlets don't
- If symptoms don't add up, pressure test to rule out a head gasket
