About this part

This is the Genuine Ford body control module for the Transit VM. It runs the van's body electrics: lighting, central locking, wipers, indicators and other cabin functions. The BCM is built into the cabin junction panel, so it also carries the cabin fuses and relays (it's sometimes listed as the fuse junction panel or fuse box).

When to replace it

• Electrical faults across several body functions at once (lights, locking, wipers) with fuses and wiring checked.
• Water damage, corrosion or burnt tracks in the BCM.
• BCM communication faults confirmed by diagnosis.

Coding and programming

The BCM holds your van's own settings: its VIN and how it's optioned (lighting, locking, alarm and so on). A brand-new module arrives blank, so it has to be set up for your van once it's fitted. Until it is, some body functions may not work properly and the van can show warning lights or fault codes.

There are two ways to do it:

• Program it with Ford diagnostic software. A Ford dealer, or an auto electrician with Ford IDS or FDRS, fits the new module and runs Ford's module set-up, which loads your van's configuration into it. This is the standard way with a new BCM.
• Clone your old module. A module specialist copies the data from your original BCM into the new one, so it comes back already set up for your van. Handy if your old unit still powers up and you'd rather not go to a dealer.

Keep your old BCM. Either way, hang on to the original until the van's working again: a cloning specialist needs it, and it's a useful back-up.
